The Importance and Role of Giving and Receiving Feedback
The
Importance and Role of Giving and Receiving Feedback

Overview and
Importance
When
people observe their own behavior and decide to do better next time, when
people ask friends to give an opinion on how well they handled a situation, or
when managers suggest that employees can improve their performance, feedback is
being employed. Feedback refers to the verbal, visual, and in our case the
written responses to messages. The most important function about feedback
is it is the only way a person can know whether the message sent was
interpreted as intended. Without feedback, one can only assume that the message has been received as
intended.
Peer Feedback
You may have already done a little formal feedback by looking at the
writing of classmates, and even looking at and responding to your own work.
When giving and receiving feedback you should always remember the following:
Ø You are commenting on the
work of a classmate, so it should be honest and fair.
Ø When you comment, be sure
you are able to give a suggestion if it is needed. That is, avoid evaluative
comments like “this is bad” or “it’s all wrong”. Instead, use more descriptive
language like “I’m unclear as to what you mean here. Please think about
changing the language you have chosen.”
Ø Always think about feedback
as a way to “share” and not “criticize”.
You and your classmates are trying to help one another become stronger
in your expression of thoughts in English.
Ø You might not always agree
with the suggestions of your classmate. That is fine. It is only a suggestion,
and you make the final choice whether to make the change when you rewrite the
document.
Ø Other students will give
you feedback using a standardized set of questions and form provided by your
English Professor.
Ø You will try to get as
much feedback from your peers as you can. You should aim for getting feedback
from at least 2 other classmates if this is possible.
Ø You will read the feedback
forms your classmates filled out about your work carefully, and then rewrite
the piece of writing. Your rewritten work should reflect editing done as a
result of feedback given by other students.
Ø When you hand in your
rewritten work to your English instructor, you will hand in all parts; the first
draft, the feedback from classmates, and the final version of what you have
written. In essence, the instructor wants to see the progression of this piece of writing.
Technically, we call this a process writing approach to learning.
Implications for your Learning
This
follows the idea of an interactive way of learning, and this will become an
additional tool for your objective to communicate clearly. Clearly, this will
give you an opportunity to learn from:
Ø the work of classmates
Ø yourself
Ø errors by rewriting your
work.
Don’t be fooled, this
type of work is hard work for both the giver and receiver.
It is important that you always try to allow enough time for both tasks,
but most importantly, you need to exercise great respect and patience for the
work of classmates and yourself. Good luck and enjoy this additional tool to
help you with this language learning journey!
