Analytical Questions for Reading
Readings
The
following is a list of analytical questions designed to get you to unlock the
meaning of the readings. Responding to
readings in your journals and having to read the essays carefully in order to
respond is often enough for you to “get” the meaning of the essays. If you are having problems with meaning or
understanding how the essays work to develop that reading, these questions
might help you focus on meaning and how it’s made in the essays.
1.
In one sentence, what is the author’s main point? Is it stated in the essay or is it
implied?
Where is it stated? How do you
know that’s the main point? Why did the
author write this?
2.
Who is the author’s audience for this essay (the headnotes might help you
figure out its
original intended audience)? Did
you feel the author was addressing you or did you
feel left out? What specific things made you feel included
or excluded?
3.
What personality does the author present to the reader? Is he or she likable or not?
Does the author see the reader as an equal
or as someone lesser than he or she?
4.
Make an outline of the essay, including your guess at the thesis
statement. What
section of the essay did you like
best? Why? Look at the outline. Does the
organization make sense? Why or why not? Did any information need to be added or
could any have been taken out?
5.
Look at the introduction. How does it
attempt to capture your interest? Did
it?
6.
Pick your favorite or least liked section of the essay and examine at least one
of the
paragraphs.
Does the paragraph have a topic sentence – a sentence that tells the
reader
what the paragraph is going to be
about? Where is it or how is it
implied? Does the
paragraph give you the information you
expect?
7.
Look at the end of the essay. Do you
feel satisfied when you’ve finished reading?
Why or why not?
8.
What words, terms, or people’s names in this essay were new to you? How did it
make you feel when you came across something
you weren’t familiar with? Did the
new words and terms make it difficult for
you to understand the essay?
